Abstract
Aisin AW (AW) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) have
developed a new RWD 6 speed automatic transmission,
AWR6B45(AC60), suitable for SUV’s and LDT’s in the worldwide
market, not only for North America but also for other countries including emerging nations. This 6 speed automatic transmission has
achieved low cost, equivalent to AW and TMCs’ current 5 speed
automatic transmission, while realizing improvement in both fuel economy and driving performance against current in-house 5-speed
automatic transmissions, in addition to satisfying both toughness
against various usage and light weight/compactness. They are accomplished by using a compact gear train structure, the latest
efficiency improvement technologies, and a high-response, compact
hydraulic control system. In addition, the compactness of this 6 speed automatic transmission enables it to replace current 4 speed and 5
speed automatic transmissions for various engine applications. This
makes it possible to contribute toward Toyota's TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) by reducing the number of parts significantly.
Introduction
Due to recent global energy and environmental issues, it has become essential to develop automobiles with a greater degree of fuel
economy and cleaner exhaust gasses.
The demand for a commercial vehicle, which is equipped with an FR
(Front mount Rear drive) automatic transmission, is expected to
increase in North America but also in other countries including emerging nations such as South East Asia.
Under these circumstances it is becoming increasingly important to
realize the improved fuel economy performance, which is applied to
each countries’ regulations, cost reduction, which is focused on the
emerging market, and enhanced durable quality against various usage. Future automatic transmission concepts for commercial
vehicles must fulfill the above requirements.Development Objects
1. Improved fuel economy while providing low cost suitable for
emerging market needs.
2. Durable quality capable of adapting to various environments
3. Covering a wide range of vehicles and engines with superior
mountability and torque capacity.
4. Capable for local procurement and production worldwide
Structure
The following is the basic structure and specifications of this
automatic transmission. Figures 1 and 2 show the cross section view
and gear train schematic of AWR6B45, respectively. Table 1 shows
the operation of AWR6B45 friction elements.
From the front (engine side) of the transmission, there are a torque
converter, oil pump and two multiple-structure clutches (C-1, C-2). Behind these units, there is a 6 speed gear train with three planetary
gear sets (front, center and rear). Around the planetary gear sets, there
is a single one-way clutch (F-3) and three brakes (B-1,B-2 and B-4). A hydraulic control system is located below the planetary gear sets.

Gear Train
AWR6B45 is structured with three planetary gear sets (All single
planetary gear), two clutches, three brakes and a single one-way
clutch. AWR6B45 has achieved 6 speeds while reducing the number
of shift elements against current 5 speed automatic transmission by adopting direct control linear solenoids. ( Fig.3)
